In the mid-70s British rock music was in the doldrums. Then groovy New Wavers Stiff Records came along to give it a good kick in the pants. Through artists such as Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric and Lene Lovich, the label launched the crunchy, three minute pop song back into the charts for the first time since The Beatles.
The turgid musical atmosphere of the mid-70s needed a breath of something refreshing. Stiff Records provided it. Andrew Jakeman, soon to metamorphose into Jake Riviera, had just returned from a US tour with Dr Feelgood - one band who were giving the old order a bit of a kicking. He had been inspired there by the way the smaller American labels operated.
